Koo Akers, co-Founder of Bonni Outbuildings, Oxfordshire

For our first episode of Travelling Tales, we visited Koo Akers, co-founder of Bonni Outbuildings, in her Oxfordshire home.

Launching in December 2023, Bonni Outbuildings are the most charming boltholes for your great outdoors. Ranging from sweet and small studios to their Bonni Large that have space for a kitchen, showroom, sitting room and mezzanine bedroom with add-ons that include everything from outdoor showers to log burners. There’s nothing out there quite like them. In early January, I paid a visit to Koo in her Oxfordshire family home to sit down for tea and a wedge of cake in the Bonni Large in the bottom of her garden.

I think my love of textiles…

“…comes from my dear granny. My earliest memories are of her showing me embroidery, picking flowers together, and patchwork blankets. She’s 108 now and her love of all things detailed and pretty hasn’t changed a jot. I think my Projektityyny pieces really remind me of her and all she’s shown me over the years.”

“I don’t really know how to describe how or why I gravitate to certain things. I just love a happy muddle of colours and patterns that just feel comforting and at ease to be around.”

“I’m not too precious about anything…

If I’ve brought something home I want everyone to enjoy rather than keeping things for best or just to be looked at. See, even Nelly asleep on your pretty patchwork – that makes me so, so happy.”

“A patchwork bedspread? There’s nothing better.”

“I’ve wanted one of these sweet little handkerchief lampshades from the moment I saw you launch them. I love a checked fabric so much and look at the embroidery on those flowers. It’s just the perfect sight.”
